I have a business line of credit for X dollars. If you have a business, you know how nice it is to have some extra back-up for large or unexpected expenses. Yesterday, I paid my outstanding balance of $285. Today, I checked the account to make sure it cleared my bank and I noticed something odd. The payment was applied BUT I still owed $25. Then I did something I rarely ever do. I called customer service.
I know. Having a phone sex company should make me more sympathetic is customer service workers because they spend all their time on the phone. It doesn’t.
Several years ago I swore I would never call another customer service number UNLESS it was an emergency like a downed electrical wire or something is flooding in my house. This $25 thing irked me because I hate having to carry a balance to the next month because I have to pay interest. Being the good Christian that I am I avoid paying interest whenever I can. Did you know interest is forbidden according to the Bible?
I called and got a guy, Ajay. I gave the account number, verified my billing address and telephone number and finally got a chance to ask my question.
Cheryl: Yesterday, the outstanding balance was $285. I paid it, the amount was applied to the account yet today the system indicates I still owe $25.
Ajay: It is a late charge.
Cheryl: The payment is not late. This is a revolving account which is current. The next payment is due August 10th.
Ajay: May I place you on hold while I research it?
Cheryl: Sure. Take your time.
Ajay: Well, Miss Cheryl. I see that it is a late charge from June.
Cheryl: What? There is not a late charge from June.
Ajay: Well, it is a late fee.
Cheryl: My question is simple. Yesterday my available balance was $99,715.00. I paid $285.00. So my available balance should be $100K. But it is not. I only have $99,975.00 available to me. There is nothing on my transaction list. So, where did the $25 go?
Ajay: Let me research it. (Minutes later) Miss Cheryl, you paid the account yesterday. It takes 3-4 days for the payment to show up. Call back next week.
Cheryl: The payment has already been applied to the account.
Ajay: I don’t think you are understanding …
Cheryl: I like most people understand basic math.
Ajay: Please do not yell at me.
Cheryl: Yelling? Honey, I just want to know what this $25 is, and you are not able to tell me because YOU do not understand the question. How can I owe $285 yesterday, pay it, pay it early and still owe $25 today with no other transactions on the account?
And around and around it went. I ended the call by requesting the mailing address for the research department. I was not the least bit rude. I was aggressive and secretly thought of disciplining him – phone sex style.
I really wish that they (whoever “they” are) would bring the customer service jobs back to America. Being able to speak English is one thing but understanding the culture is priceless. This guy really struggled to understand my concern. He was not an idiot. He just did not get it. When I call customer service I need someone on the other end who understands my pain.
